Location

Cancún and the state of Quintana Roo were originally populated by the Itzae Maya who came from further south and quickly adapted to this region. They behind extraordinary vestiges of their civilization such as the seaside fortress at Tulum, the cities of Coba and Kohunlich, among others.

The state of Quintana Roo was once part of the state of Yucatán, it was named after Don Andrés Quintana Roo, poet and writer born on Mérida, Yucatán, and is now the 31ts Mexican state.

In 1968, Mexican President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz commissioned the Bank of Mexico to produce a National Tourism Plan that would help to increase the country's Gross National Product. The project was meants to generate investment opportunities for the private sector, create jobs, increase Mexico's global profile by making thos state viable for tourism and economically self-sufficient.s
